Bill Clayton presentation June 21
Sunday, June 21 from 2 pm to 3:30 pm we have a special presentation by Bill Clayton at the Seagull Lake Community Center (Fire Hall #3), free of charge.
The presentation will be an over-view of the American Indian archaeology of NE Minnesota before European intrusion. The notion of a wilderness area like the BWCAW as being pristine as in, devoid of human settlement of any kind, is a very, very false notion and does a great dis-service to the generations of indigenous Native American groups. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was their home for thousands of years prior to government displacement in the 19th century. We’ll be taking an all-too-brief look at their history on the land through the lens of forensic evidence gathered and interpreted by archaeologists working in the area for the last 30 years or so.
July 5th will mark the tenth anniversary of the Gunflint Trail Historical Society and the fifth full season that Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center has been open. To celebrate the Gunflint Trail Historical Society is hosting a celebration/anniversary event at the Seagull Lake Community Center. The celebration will be a sit down dinner catered by Valentini’s Vincino Lago of Duluth. Cost is $50/person. Reservations are recommended we have a limited number of seats available at the Center. To reserve your dinner reservation you can call Chik-Wauk Museum from 10 am to 5 pm daily at 218-388-9915 or you can also go to the website for Chik-Wauk Museum and make reservations online.
The United States Forest Service will be here every Tuesday from 2 pm to 3:30 pm for a special presentation on the front porch of the Chik-Wauk Museum. Each week will be a different talk free of charge.
